Blood-regulating Formulae

Blood-regulating formulae treat disorders related to abnormal blood flowing, mainly for dispelling blood stasis and arresting bleeding.

In TCM, blood is viewed simply as a red fluid flowing along the blood vessels, providing nutrition and lubrication for the body. Normal blood circulation relies on mutual coordination of the organs, meridians, and vessels, many conditions can affect the blood flow, and result in a sluggish flow and even bleeding. A general or localized stagnated blood circulation will lead to blood stasis, the feature symptoms include stabbing pain, lumps, bleeding (dark purplish blood with clotting), dark complexion and a purplish tongue with blood spots. Blood stasis remedies are often applied in conditions like missed periods, menstrual pain, tumors, paralysis of the body and traumatic injuries. Bleeding disorders such as nosebleeds, vomiting of blood, blood in the stools, bloody urine, and heavy menses flow are associated with injuries, reckless movement of blood, blood and qi dysfunctions. Generally, blood-regulating formulae should be prescribed according to involved organs, special pathogenic influences, damaged locations, and whether the disorder is acute or chronic. Moreover, blood and qi (vital energy) are mutually promote and nourish each other, and thus qi herbs or other tonic herbs are often added in the formulae, to enhance the overall efficacy.

Blood-regulating formulae should be used with caution in women who are pregnant or heavy menses flow.
