Orifice-opening Formulae

Orifice-opening formulae are used to reopen sensory orifices and wake up spirit.

Loss of consciousness, delirium, epilepsy and convulsions are referred as closed conditions of the sensory orifices. Traditionally, TCM uses puntent and aromatic substances to re-open the sensory orifices for treating these conditions, samples of aromatic substances are musk, borneol, cow-bezoar and benzoin. The orifice-opening formulae are usually used in conditions associated with toxic heat sinking into the pericardium or turbid phlegm misting the heart, individuals should have specific manifestations such as unconsciousness, clenched jaw and fists, rigid limbs, rapid and coarse respiration and a forceful pulse. However, it is definitely contraindicated when there are symptoms like limb coldness, profuse sweating, sallow respiratory movement or mouth breathing, and even enuresis that belong to spirit collapse situation.

Orifice-opening formulae can only be used for treating critical condition and for temporary, once the condition becomes stable, then it should be stopped immediately. Long-term administration can easily lead to exhaustion of inborn qi.

This category of formulae is usually prepared as pills, powders or injections to facilitate emergency use.
