Harmonizing Formulae

These formulae mediate or regulate the physiological functions needed so as to achieve in a new balanced condition, which involve complex processes in different levels of the body. They are usually used in shao yang diseases, organ dysfunctions, disharmonies in qi (vital energy), blood and meridians.

TCM harmonizing therapy aims to rectify any unbalanced or deviated function; the remedies focus on enhancing healthy energy and dispelling pathogens at the same time. For example, shao yang diseases occur in half exterior and half interior, regions like the liver, gallbladder, spleen and stomach are affected. Individuals often have symptoms such as a bitter taste in mouth, dry throat, blurred version, alternating chills and fever, poor appetite, chest fullness and nausea. On examination, a white tongue coating and taut pulse is present. TCM believes that some health problems such as disharmony between the above organs, or gastrointestinal disturbance cannot be resolved by therapies like perspiring, heat clearing and purgative, but need to carry out harmonizing to smooth the disharmony between the damaged organs or functions.

The harmonizing formulae have gentle properties and should be prescribed according to specific indications. They are not suggested for those exterior syndromes  or interior syndromes that have transformed heat.
