Wind-eliminating Formulae
Wind evil is considered a yang pathogen and it has influential effects. Characteristic conditions involving wind disharmonies are sudden onset and a lingering and changeable nature. It often combines with other pathogens especially cold evil to invade the body. Externally contracted wind disorders can attack the body surface, muscles, bones, tendons, joints and meridians and thus lead to headache, aversion to wind blowing, itching, skin rashes, numbness, limb spasms, movement difficulty in the joints, even mouth and eye distortion and body convulsion. Endogenous wind is mainly attributed to liver and kidney dysfunctions, and the conditions are characterized by dizziness, vertigo, tremors, convulsions, loss of muscle tone, difficulty in speaking, sudden loss of consciousness, facial distortion and paralysis. TCM formulae for treating conditions involving wind are divided into expelling exogenous wind and extinguishing endogenous wind.
Commonly selected monarch herbs for the exogenous wind remedies include notopterygium root, pubescent angelica root, ledebouriella root, Sichuan lovage rhizome and schizonepeta herb; while common monarch herbs for the endogenous wind remedies include gambir vine stem, abalone shell, tall gastrodia tuber, white peony root and rehmannia root. In addition, herbs for enriching and activating blood are often added in the remedies.
