From a TCM viewpoint,
hypertension is mainly due to a combination of over stimulation of emotions, physical degenerations and improper dietary habits, leading to an imbalance of
yin and yang, and a disturbance of qi and blood movements inside the body. The
liver and
kidneys are usually the most affected organs, when individuals’ body also accumulated
pathogenic factors like wind, fire, phlegm and blood stasis, vary symptoms may be experienced, such as dizziness, headache, palpitations and chest stuffiness.
Chinese massage can be an effective alternative to prevent further progression of hypertensive conditions. By stimulating the nerves and regulating body fluids, massage can enhance the vasomotor control of the brain, so as to relieve contractions in the small arteries and bring down the blood pressure.
- Use the fingertips to press at the center the head crown (Du 20), and knead for 30 times;
- Use a middle fingertip to knead at the midpoint between the eyebrows (Ex-HN 3), 30 times;
- Thumb-knead the temples, 30 times;
- Use the thumbs to press on two sides of skull base (Gb 20), and knead for 30 times;
- Use the thumb and index finger to nip the depressions behind the ears, 30 times;
- Cross the hands and place on the navel, rub over the area for 30 times;
- Place the hands on both sides of rib cage, rub along the ribs, back and forth for 30 times;
- Keep the upper body straight, make one hand into a fist, and beat on the middle of shoulder (Gb 21) of opposite side, about 15 times each side;
- Make a hand into half fist, and clap on the opposite upper back, about 30 times each side;
- Use the thumb to knead at 2-finger-breadth above the midline of wrist (Pc 6), 30 times each side;
- Use the thumb to knead at the lateral fold of flexed elbow (Li 11), 30 times each arm.
- Use the thumb to knead at 1-finger-breadth below the anterior crest of each tibia (St 36), 30 times;
- Use the thumb to knead at 3-finger-breadth above the inner malleolus of each ankle (Sp 6), 30 times.
