Massage techniques that focus on the neck and back regions are beneficial to conditions such as neck and back pain, cervical spinal problem, neck stiffness, respiratory disorders, chest stuffiness and pain, as well as palpitations. The regions have many acupoints that are very effective for common ailments.
- Rub the neck: use three finger tips to press on the bottom of skull (feng chi, Gb20), massage in small circular motions towards the root of neck (da zhui, Du14), up and down for about 10 times; press on the back of skull (feng fu, Du16), massage in small circular motions towards the root of neck again, up and down for about 10 times. Use the thumb to knead on the three acupoints (Gb20, Du14 & Du16), knead forcefully for about 20〜30 times on each, this should create a feeling of soreness.
- Knead acupoints: use the middle finger to knead forcefully on the upper back of the opposite side, focus on the acupoints da zhui (Du14), da zhu (Bl11), shen zhu (Du12), feng men (Bl12), fei shu (Bl13), for about 30 times each; these should create a feeling of soreness on the body points.
- Clap the back: make the hand into a half fist, and clap on the back of opposite back, about 10 times on each side.
- Beat the shoulder: keep the upper body straight, make one hand into a fist, and beat on the middle of shoulder (Gb21) of opposite side, about 20〜30 times each side.
- Rotate the shoulder: keep the upper body straight, raise the arms to heart level and fully expand the shoulder, rotate the shoulder joints as much as possible, this can stimulate the acupoints around the shoulder blades.
