General Rules for Acupoint Selection

According to TCM experience, the effects of acupoints are mostly selective to the diseased locations only, for different conditions of the same location, there is not much difference in the treatment. So practically, it is important for physicians to identify the exact diseased location, and select the appropriate points accordingly. Moreover, it is necessary to consider the nature of disease, individual symptoms, and multiple uses and effects of acupoints.

In general, each acupuncture or moxibustion prescription may be used several or one of the above mentioned rules. For example in some complicated cases, a combination of remote and local points not only enhances overall efficacy, but also makes the outcome more sustainable.
