Moxibustion is a therapy that uses moxa wool, or moxa wool mixed with other herbs to treat and prevent disease. The moxa is the dried leaf of argy wormwood (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) which is warm in property and smells fragrant. It is easy to ignite and combusts relatively slow. The heat is mild and moxa ash will not disperse and drop. When the ignited moxa is placed on the body surface, heat can penetrates deep into the affected location without damaging the skin. It can warm the meridians, invigorate the flow of qi and blood, strengthen the body's resistance to disease and elminate evils from the body.
The following are moxibustion applications and their functions:
1. Moxibustion with ginger : Indicated for symptoms caused by general weakness, under-functions of spleen and stomach, muscle skeleton disease and others due to yang deficiency.
2. Moxibustion with salt : Usually applied at the belly button, it is effective for the emergencies such as collapse.
3. Mild-warm moxibustion : Suitable for all conditions indicated by moxibustion.
4. Sparrow-pecking moxibustion : Indicated for numbness and pain in the limbs.
5. Moxibustion with warming needle : Combined use of acupuncture and moxibustion. Usually used in conditions such as stroke that can benefit from both techniques.
